The average price of gas in Midland trails the average across the state by nearly 25 cents, according to AAA Texas.

The association’s survey of larger metropolitan areas again cited Midland as having the most expensive average price -- $2.53 this week, which was a cent lower than last week.

AAA Texas reports the average price across the state is $2.29 per gallon. The average price in Midland is $2.53. It is the 14th straight week the association pegged Midland as having the most expensive gas.

Looking at TexasGasPrices.com, the number of stations reporting gas above $2.50 a gallon in Midland increased from 36 to 40, which was more than Odessa’s 35 stations. There wasn’t a station in Lubbock or San Angelo reporting gas above $2.40. Abilene reported two stations.

Industry officials have previously cited transportation costs and the willingness of drivers in Midland to pay more as reasons that the price of gas in Midland is so much higher than even San Angelo (which had five stations with gas below $2), Lubbock (average price there was $2.18) and the rest of the region and state.

One year ago, the average price in Midland-Odessa was $2.135 a gallon, while the average price across the state was $2.101 – a difference of less than 3 pennies.

There appears to be a least one silver lining in this report. First, retailers with lower-priced gas in Midland – basically in west, central and northwest Midland – are lowering their prices, so those wanting to pay as low as $2.19 or $2.25 can do so and have options. Sometimes, a person would have to drive 1 mile to find that.

For instance, at the intersection of Midland Drive and Wadley Avenue, a pair of stations report gas for $2.55 a gallon. One mile to the east, gas on Thursday was posted at $2.25. In each case, a store sets a price and the consumer responds accordingly, even paying as much as $4.50 to $5 extra for a tank of gas.

AAA Texas also reported the average price nationwide was down a penny to settle at an average $2.53 per gallon and that El Paso has the cheapest gasoline in Texas this week at an average $2.16 per gallon. According to an Associated Press report, the organization’s experts say 2018 has seen fluctuating crude oil prices, strong gasoline demand and U.S. oil production records that combine to create a volatile price market for drivers.
