Though countries across Africa are exploring ways to exploit their own gas assets the continent remains the globe’s lowest consumer of gas. Integrating gas into the domestic renewables energy sector is an ongoing quest that competes with gas exploration for export purposes.
South Africa’s DMRE issued a Request For Information (RFI) to possibly develop a gas-to-power programme and the country’s Integrated Resources Plan makes provision for new electricity to be generated from gas. Plus, the demand for power generation is predicted to rise with new power stations.
These plans are not yet set in stone though. So, the question remains, what are the different options available for gas utilisation in Africa? What can South Africa’s nascent plans teach the rest of the continent about the way to go and more importantly, what can the country learn from the continent?
This roundtable will delve into:
- Creating the supporting legislation and policy
- Short term procurement for emergency use
- Long term provision through the retrofitting of power stations
- What are the options for gas utlisation in Africa which are not hype but already happening?
